  78. This document is one among many designed to secure a rudimentary 
  79. understanding of the Internet as it evolves.  It has been crafted 
  80. with a mage's interests in mind and a warmth of heart for the mystic.
  81.  
  82. It is here assumed that the reader has some experience with computers
  83. and computer systems, and has at least a modicum of exposure to
  84. communications networks.  If this is not the case, please refer to 
  85. Version 1, Appendix B, General Information.
  86.  
  87. This guide is designed to be updated.  If you have information which 
  88. can be included in subsequent versions, please email it to the Editor.
  89.  
  90. The organization of this guide is based on speed and directness of 
  91. communication.  The first section deals with the message-based 
  92. connections, Email and Usenet, listing contact addresses and 
  93. newsgroups of interest.   The second covers Telnet, including a 
  94. list of BBSs, IRC Channels and MU*s.  The latter two are live 
  95. interaction sites.  File transfer protocol (FTP) locations and 
  96. site structures comprise the final section.

  98. In Version 1 there are two appendices.  The first is a description of
  99. AMER (Alliance for Magical and Earth Religions).  The second is 
  100. titled 'Researching the Internet: Nets and Networking' and contains 
  101. general information about telecommunications and information nexi.

  912. The Alliance for Magical and Earth Religions (AMER) is a 
  913. St.Louis-based organization made up of representatives of several
  914. distinct magical and/or Earth-centered religious traditions.  Our
  915. members include witches, neo-pagans, Satanists, and Christians,
  916. working together for freedom of religion for all Americans.
  917.  
  918. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
  919. 1.  AMER will defend the right of every American to practice his or
  920. her own religion, insofar as that religion's practices do not
  921. directly harm anyone.  In particular, AMER will actively campaign
  922. for tolerance for magical and Earth-Centered religions.
  923. 2.  AMER will work to promote a positive image for magical and
  924. Earth-centered religions, and to counter negative propaganda about
  925. such groups.
  926. 3.  AMER will promote cooperation among the various magical and
  927. Earth-centered religious groups.
  928. 4.  AMER will serve as a source of accurate information on magical
  929. and Earth-centered religions and practices.
  930.  
  931. DEFINITIONS
  932. Magical Religion:  any religious belief or practice which includes,
  933. as an aspect of its faith or an element in its ritual, the practice
  934. of what they call magic or the use of psychic powers.
  935. Earth Religion:  any religious belief or practice which holds as a
  936. tenet a reverence for the Earth.
  937.  
  938. HOW DOES AMER WORK?
  939. AMER will provide speakers to schools, police groups, churches, and
  940. anyone else who is interested about learning about magical and earth
  941. religions.
  942.  
  943. AMER'S members work together to combat negative attitudes about the
  944. occult by writing letters to individuals and organizations who have
  945. disseminated incorrect information about the occult.  We also help
  946. victims of religious discrimination through letters, phone calls and
  947. personal contact.
  948.  
  949. AMER AND THE MEDIA
  950. AMER monitors media coverage of topics which affect the magical
  951. community. When one of our members sees an article or television
  952. story which gives unfair or slanted coverage to an event which
  953. involves "the occult", we contact the news organization in question
  954. to express our disapproval.  We also write to commend news
  955. organizations which provide what we see as "good coverage".  We hope
  956. that our efforts will promote fair media treatment of members of
  957. magical and earth religions.
  958.  
  959. AMER AND THE POLICE
  960. AMER's members are also available to work with police departments to
  961. provide expert advice on crimes and rumors of crimes which involve
  962. or appear to involve members of the magical community.
  963.  
  964. AMER AND THE CLERGY
  965. AMER works to contact clergy of all faiths and let them know about
  966. our concerns, in the hopes that they will come to understand, and
  967. even to tolerate, magical and earth religions.

  969. COMMUNITY SERVICE
  970. AMER encourages all of its members to participate in community
  971. service projects such as food drives, disaster relief, or
  972. environmental projects.  AMER's St. Louis members meet every six
  973. weeks to clean up a stretch of highway.  We feel that this highly
  974. visible form of service helps promote a positive image for
  975. occultists.

  977. WILL AMER TELL EVERYONE ABOUT MY RELIGION?
  978. The only members of AMER who are required to appear or speak in
  979. public are the members of the Board of Directors.  If you wish, your
  980. membership can be kept totally confidential.  In addition, AMER does
  981. not promote or endorse the activities of any specific religion, so
  982. you will not be asked to participate in any religious activities.

  985. None of AMER's goals can be accomplished without a large and
  986. enthusiastic membership.  We need volunteers for a variety of
  987. projects, from letter-writing to highway cleanup.  Money?  Of course
